About Mekorot National Water Company Ltd.

For more than 86 years, we have expressed the unique Israeli spirit: daring, sophistication, and innovation in the face of the complex challenges of the country's water sector. These challenges are due to the country's location on the edge of the desert and a paucity of water sources, which are under security threats, and face a climate crisis that jeopardizes the integrity of the planet.

Every one of our actions aims to help the family at home, the farmer in the field, the worker in a factory. We understand each of their needs, and we plan and shape Israel’s water map accordingly. We do so by constantly exceeding the boundaries of knowledge, capabilities, and water technologies. We turn every risk and every challenge into an opportunity, with the objective of providing a reliable, high-quality, and steady supply of water.
Our achievements in the water sector have positioned us as one of the top water companies in the world and contributed to consolidating Israel’s standing as a water powerhouse in the OECD. For example, in May 2022, Global Water Intelligence (GWI), the organization of the world’s leading water companies, and Mekorot will join the Forum of the world’s top 60 water companies. Two years earlier, in 2020, GWI ranked Israel fourth worldwide and Mekorot as one of the most operationally efficient water companies in the world, because of its low annual water depreciation rate of 3%, compared with the OECD average of 15%, and the company’s outstanding infrastructures, research, professional knowhow, and handling of water sources.

A dynamic company in a changing climate
Mekorot supplies more than 1.7 billion cubic meters of water to homes, farms, and factories annually. Regionally, the company has approx.13 million consumers, who receive water via municipalities, local authorities, rural communities, and the private sector, as well as the Palestinian Authority and the Kingdom of Jordan by virtue of diplomatic agreements. The company operates 13,000 km of water lines, 3,00 production and supply facilities, 1,000 water reservoirs and pools, 26 desalination plants. The knowhow, experience, and capabilities that we have accumulated in the handling of different water sources are assets that are more precious than gold for meeting the world’s water challenges. On the basis of these assets and technology leadership and innovation, we strive to realize the vast potential of the resource of life – water – in four key fields: investment in startups, business collaborations, applied research, and in-house innovation and the development of patented products.

When experience and technology meet
With more than 86 years, experience and knowhow behind us, Mekorot is synonymous with technology innovation, multidisciplinary professionalism, and financial soundness. Our proven advantages enable us to manage different water sources strategically, develop comprehensive mega-projects, apply a circular water economy, and lead advanced work processes that support our business and operational targets.

Main features of Mekorot’s work
• Financial soundness – every year since 2003, Standard & Poor’s Maalot has given Mekorot its highest rating – AAAil. In 2019, Mekorot issued its first tradable bonds, on the basis of a prospectus, to the general public in Israel, and has subsequently filed with the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE) every year.
• Integrative water management – Mekorot can supply an integrated mix of water solutions, thanks to the company’s multidisciplinary professionalism. The company operates advance water carrier management and operational models to optimally combine different kinds of water, seawater and brackish water desalination, sewage treatment and the recycling of marginal water for agricultural use, water sources rehabilitation to proper quality, water sources security, and more.
• Extensive international operations – Mekorot is a byword for striving for maximum efficiency in all its operations and adapting its network of agreements to work with foreign suppliers, achieve competitiveness, and improve the effectiveness of its international tenders. In March 2021, the company signed the first agreement of its kind to build and upgrade the water system of the Kingdom of Bahrain, as a function of the Abraham Accords signed with a number of Gulf and African states. In September 2021, the supply of water to the Kingdom of Jordan was doubled, and in March 2022, an agreement was signed with the Azerbaijani government to draw up a 30-year master plan for the country’s agriculture.Last November, the company singed its first MOU in Morocco, ans since then we initiated new bussiness services in Chile, Argentina, India and Cyprus. Mekorot intends to utilize its new capabilities for a wide range of water solutions for countries near and far.
• The digital revolution – in recent years, Mekorot has undergone a digital transformation that includes connecting its OT and IT systems into a uniform command. At the same time, the company has improved its cyber defenses for critical infrastructures. Alongside its extensive knowledge of water, the company is at the forefront of implementing innovative water technologies. The company has contracted with eight energy management, infrastructure defense, and big data startups to improve its operations and market its skills globally as part of a basket of solutions for coping with the climate crisis.
• Sustainable development – accelerating aridity around the world is nothing new to Mekorot. We’ve been there, dealing with the problems of water shortages, but we also know how to move forward and lead creative solutions to increase the water supply and protect the stability of the water sector. These times will continue to accompany the world in the coming years, and we are ready for it, which is why we are leading a policy of sustainable development and the protection of water sources and the environment for future generations. Since 2011, Mekorot has participated in the MAALA Business Social Responsibility Index which ranks Israeli companies according to their social-environmental performance, based on sustainability and corporate responsibility criteria. For both 2021 and 2022 MAALA Index, which reviewed Mekorot’s GES activities, gave the company its highest rating, Platinum +. At the same time, Mekorot independently notified the Ministry of Environmental Protection of its greenhouse gasses emissions. In the report, the company measured its carbon footprint based on accepted methodologies, as part of the company’s support and compliance with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Mekorot is Israel’s largest civilian power consumer, accounting for 5% of total national consumption, which is why it is seeking to lower its energy costs, which will lower its total costs, contribute to lower water rates, and reduces its carbon footprint. Therefore, in 2021, it launched a project to cover the walls of its water reservoirs with solar panels with the support of the Government Corporations Authority and the Accountant General at the Ministry of Finance. At the same time, Mekorot has begun placing fiber optic cables along its water lines, which will help it monitor malfunctions and leaks, but also serve the private sector with high-speed internet service nationwide, especially in the periphery and Judea and Samaria.
